Why Raise Chickens?

It seems these days that everyone is talking about it, and some are actually DOING IT! Why the growing interest in raising backyard chickens? There are many reasons people give for wanting to raise chickens including eggs, meat, pets and showing.
In a recent poll conducted by BackYardChickens Forum 1165 members responded (as of September 3, 2009) and the results are below:
I raise chickens for (you can choose more than one):
- Eggs – 28% (1064)
- Pets – 23% (891)
- Meat 7% (278)
- Fertilizer 11% (417)
- Bug Control 12% (470)
- More interesting and/or easy than other animals 9% (349)
- Other 4% (163)
- Showing and Exhibition 3% (130)
Chickens make great pets. They are funny, amusing to watch and have personality. Perhaps that is why the percentage raising chickens for meat is so low!
